When should I have a Sports Massage?

There is no "best" time to have a sports massage, everyone differs in their needs and responds differently to treatment. Please speak to me for advice after your first treatment.

I am usually quite nervous, could I bring a friend with me?

Absolutely!! I actually recommend to bring a partner/friend with you. Mostly I show some safe techniques or exercises where your partner will come handy and you can both practice them later. It is also fine to record the session if you prefer.

What are the benefits of sports massage?

Common conditions that respond well to treatment are:

  • Neck and shoulder pain

  • Upper and lower back pain

  • Tension headaches

  • Knee pain (runners knee)

  • Shoulder pain (swimmers shoulder)

  • Tight calves / hamstrings / ITB

  • RSI in forearms, hands and wrists

  • Tennis elbow

  • Golfers elbow

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Whiplash

How often should I have Sports Massage?

How often you have massage therapy depends on many factors relating to what your injury/problem area is and what your goals are. Are you after some maintenance work? Then perhaps once per month might be enough, especially if you take the time to do a bit of homework. Do you have a long standing issue that you wish to get addressed properly? Then a number of sessions spread over a few weeks would be more appropriate. The number will depend on how much you do the exercises you get to help increase your mobility and how long the problem has been there but often 3-4 will clear most of it up.

An athlete in hard training? Perhaps once per week, or more, leading up to a competition.

As you see it all depends on your goals.

I don't personally recommend  sports massage to those who are not living active life. You can benefit from it only for a very short term, but without recommended exercises and diet you cannot expect any long term results.

Does it hurt?

Sometimes: discomfort as a result of dealing with injuries or even with extreme tightness can be unpleasant, and it is important to be able to communicate with me and let me know if you feel any pain. You may also find the areas that have been worked with are tender up to a couple of days after treatment.

Are there any reasons I can’t have a sports massage?

Massage is not recommended in cases where you may suffer from the following conditions:

  • Infectious skin disease, rash, or open wounds

  • Immediately after surgery

  • Immediately after chemotherapy or radiation, unless recommended by your doctor

  • People with osteoporosis should consult their doctor before getting a massage

  • Prone to blood clots. There is a risk of blood clots being dislodged. If you have heart disease, check with your doctor before having a massage

  • Massage should not be done directly over bruises, inflamed skin, unhealed wounds, tumours, abdominal hernia, or areas of recent fractures
